ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH RESTORATION

 "Keeping Our Church For Tomorrow"

Over the last few months, Fr. Weiser and the Building Committee have been working hard to address the problems with the church building.

The following pictures will begin to illustrate the issues that we will be facing in the coming months.

An engineering firm has been hired to study the situation.  Due to the colder winter months, work cannot be started until the spring.  In the meanwhile, the Building Committee is looking into temporary measures so that further damage is not done to the Church.

Further information will be available, sooner rather than later.

UPDATE FROM FR. WEISER

10/28/11

The building committee received the engineers' report, which laid out the cost to remedy the structural situation of the front wall of the Church.

The cost for this they estimated as $ 94,000.

We cannot begin to take on this project now. The temperature will be too low for the materials to properly set.

Engineers suggest a way to secure the bowing brick from above the large window to beneath the Virgin Mary statue until late spring. It will be somewhat unattractive but will do the job.

We will have a campaign to raise the $94,000 around May. Please keep this in mind.

It is important as well to recall that there remains ongoing maintenance. In the six months from April through September, we invested $74,000 in our buildings and grounds. Unusual weather raised our investment by about 10 %.

Ordinary care of the Church continues. While our stained glass windows are in great shape, their settings, especially on the lake side, are scheduled for much needed attention.

It is the nature of buildings, especially those as old as ours, to present us with surprise challenges. Perhaps one useful thing to come out of the issue of the front of the Church is to heighten the parish's awareness of the costs we face month in and month out in the ordinary care for our beautiful buildings.

I am so grateful to our building committee for the work they take on, and the interest they have in the parish. The members are very capable, have a dedication to the parish, an eye for detail, are careful about money, and have a  wealth of experience with buildings.
